As-Is - November 5 - December 17, 2011
written by William Hoffman
Directed by John Farmanesh-Bocca
AS IS, written by William Hoffman in the early 1980s, was one of the first produced plays to deal with the subject of AIDS. It opened on Broadway in 1985, won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, an Obie Award, and was nominated for a Tony as Best Play.
A deeply introspective ensemble piece with wry humor, stark brittle tension and unforgettable characters, AS IS creates a tour de force for actors, centering around what happens when a successful young man in New York (RICH) contracts the HIV virus in a time when that was looked upon as an almost certain death sentence. AS IS is ultimately an intense, at times darkly comic play about the fight to survive.
