Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access
The New American Theatre deeply values the many, varied, and diverse storytellers that make up our community. We will continue our journey that seeks to enhance diversity, inclusion, equity and access. We recognize that our work is ongoing, imperfect, and unfinished.
CULTURAL EQUITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT
The New American Theatre seeks to inspire, educate and nurture theater artists and the community around us to promote cultural equity and inclusion through our programming, policies and practices. Founded in 1986 in New York and reestablished in Los Angeles in 1995, we continue our commitment towards the creative expression of telling stories and encouraging conversations that advance equity in gender, age, ethnicity, race, culture, sexual orientation and ability.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The New American Theatre acknowledges the land on which we sit as the traditional and unceded territory of the Chumash, Tongva, and Kizh. In this acknowledgement, we recognize the history of dispossession and erasure, and offer renewed honor and respect to the indigenous people who came before us and live among us.
This acknowledgement serves as a first step into honoring the land, and building community with those who inhabit this land with us.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF BLACK LIVES
We understand that America was built at the often-fatal expense of forcefully enslaved Black people. We acknowledge and remember those who did not survive the horrific journey to America, those who were beaten and lynched at the hands of White Supremacists, those who died, and those who are still dying while fighting for their own lives, freedom and civil liberties.
The New American Theatre acknowledges that we have benefitted from the system of White Supremacy. We will continue to uphold anti-racist values in all facets of our work—the art we make, our day-to-day operations, our studio, and in the community.
GENDER PRONOUNS STATEMENT
The New American Theatre welcomes and honors all gender identities. We respect everyone’s gender pronouns as well as one's right to share their gender pronouns. We recognize that sharing gender pronouns is a personal choice, and we also support people’s right not to share their pronouns publicly.
